About

Prior to my retirement in August 2026, I was a Distinguished Research Staff Member at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, where I helped establish autonomic computing — the concept of self-managing complex computing systems — as a discipline. I co-authored the 2003 IEEE Computer article The Vision of Autonomic Computing, co-founded the International Conference on Autonomic Computing in 2004, and co-authored several early technical papers that showed how utility functions could be used to specify high-level goals. In 2013, I was named an IEEE Fellow for my leadership and technical contributions to this field.

Over my career, my work has spanned computer virus epidemiology and biologically inspired digital immune systems, economic models of software agents such as shopbots and pricebots, data center energy efficiency, and multi-modal AI assistants.

Post-retirement, I continue to pursue interests in multi-modal user interfaces. Observing that people simultaneously employ multiple forms of verbal and non-verbal communication, I believe that, to be fully effective, AI assistants must likewise understand and engage in combinations of verbal and non-verbal communication (e.g. pointing and other gestures, eye gaze, and facial expressions). One of my team's early forays into multi-modal AI assistants won the AAAI best demo award in 2018; the full demo can be found here.
